One of the most common questions I hear is, “Is health and wellness coaching right for me?” And it’s a great question! For you to answer this in your best interests, here are some questions you should consider:
1. Am I ready to commit to making changes?
The process of starting a health and wellness journey will require a commitment to change. Sometimes a person is just not ready because of other issues in her life, such as depression or divorce. You might need to take care of these concerns before focusing on your health and wellness.
2. Do I have a support team?
All of us need help to achieve our health and wellness goals. This is where a support team can really make a difference. As I discuss in my book, this team can consist of formal members such as your physician and trainer, and informal ones such as a spouse and encouraging friends and family members. Even if you don’t have a support team yet, starting a health and wellness journey can help you develop one.
3. Do I need help with accountability?
You can have the best plan for wellness but sometimes getting it accomplished is the problem. By getting help from a health and wellness coach, two things can happen. You learn why you want to achieve your goals and you can learn how to monitor your progress.
4. Do I know why I am interested in improving my health and wellness?
One of the benefits of health and wellness coaching is that the process starts with developing a wellness vision. This vision includes learning why wellness is important to you, what motivates you, and what is important to you. This vision forms the foundation for successful change.
5. Has there been a change in your circumstances?
Sometimes there is an event or a circumstance that gets you interested in the idea of improving your health and wellness. Some of these might be:
—Developing a chronic illness like diabetes
—A change in circumstances like COVID closing gyms
—Learning that you have osteoporosis
—Planning a vacation that requires more walking or physical activity than your norm
—Wanting a healthy habit to replace the cigarettes you’ve given up
—Having a hard time keeping up with your young grandchildren
Any of these might be the incentive you need to start a wellness journey.
